Historical evolution
In 1979, the rainbow flag underwent its final change, becoming the six-color flag. When it was hung vertically on Market Street in San Francisco, the central stripe became blurred. The turquoise was discarded to make the flag simpler. Indigo was also replaced with blue, making a six-color version of the flag.
In 1989, John Stout of Los Angeles successfully sued his West Hollywood landlord for forbidding him to fly the flag from the balcony of his apartment. Since then, the rainbow flag has gained national attention, its colorful and optimistic design replacing the more common pink triangle.
